Palais des Beaux-Arts and LaM Museum
The Palais des Beaux-Arts, overlooking Place de la République, is one of the richest museums in France: Rubens, Goya, Delacroix and relief plans of the fortified towns of the North follow one another. In Villeneuve-d’Ascq, the LaM rounds off the visit with a remarkable collection of modern, contemporary and outsider art, set within a sculpture park. A Sunday shared between both leaves plenty to talk about afterwards.
Reinvented sites and the lille3000 seasons
Since 2004, the Tri Postal, a former postal sorting centre near the station, and Gare Saint-Sauveur, a former freight station, have hosted exhibitions, concerts and creative evenings. The lille3000 seasons, each built around a new theme, turn the whole city into a trail of artworks. Meeting in front of an installation and extending the evening in a nearby brasserie turns a classic outing into a memory of its own.
The flea market and a walk around De Gaulle
On the first weekend of September, the Braderie de Lille draws millions of visitors and turns the pavements into one vast open-air market, with mussels and chips as the common thread. In Old Lille, the birthplace of Charles de Gaulle reminds visitors that the general was born here. On Lyad, Lille singles share their favourite exhibitions; it is up to you to find someone to continue the conversation over coffee.
